I'm not looking for an answer from a dictionary. But instead I want to know what it means to you. Someone who is diagnosed as mentally challenged? or a stupid person? Because I for one, think they have nothing in common.

my brother is mentally and physically handicapped and while some people might call him retarded, people also might call their friends retarded after they make a stupid comment or something...the resemblence doesn't make sence to me since my brother is actually very smart despite his disabilities.

Retarded is an archaic word and is really not used by the mental health community. Put it this way, it is crude and rude. Your brother is developmentally handicapped, or as we like to say challenged. He can lead a good life, with some love,care and above all understanding. Not everyone gets a fair share at life and it is up to the ones that do, to help the ones that didn't. I said help, for they should be left alone to do what they can do. So not to get some of you mad out there.Not all people can take care of the handicapped, it takes a special person with compassion and dedication to another. I do it and it is not hard work, but it is a lot of work. All I ask is if you see a developmentally handicapped person don't make fun of them or be afraid of them.

To me it means that your I.Q. is 20% below "normal" or it would be an i.q. of 80.
It does NOT mean that this person is worthless, it does not mean that that person cannot live a long, happy and meaningful life, because they can! In fact, I consider them no less "worthwhile" than me or anyone else. Quality of living is not based on your I.Q., but on who you have in your life, what you do with your life and who you love. Are you happy? Do you have friends? Most of the mentally challenged people I know have all these things; while the people who work with them go home alone or to husbands and wives who complicate their lives. As far as I am concerned, if they're genuinely happy, how can you argue with that?

Slow to learn, period. A retired person who drives off the road while watching a bluebird fly by is retarded, just as is a fifteen yr old Down's syndrome who can't yet write his name. Actually, the first example is probably more so b/c he knows better and does ignorant things anyway... It's a matter of fact in the latter, and a matter of practice in the former.

You are correct, they don't have anything in comoon.
Mentally handicapped, and retardation are the same thing.
That is what retarded means.
Severally Retarded, Moderate, Mild, and Borderline.
To me, the word means retarded, as in learning and grown are retarded...
or slowed.
I don't use it anymore for people that are stupid, I just flat out call them stupid :)

slow. yeah...it's mainly just a mentally challenged person, not really stupid, though. Autistim is when you could do/know something that most people could'nt, but you don't know something that common people know....like: you could memorize all the numbers in the phone book, and not know that sticking your hand in fire will hurt you. it's really sad.

Stunted, or slowed down. It has a lot more meanings that talking about a person who is handicapped.

The technical is an extra chromosone. The fact is they are us just a little overdeveloped. Therefore they have mentally challenged behavior because it is more taxing to them and their overdeveloped brain.

I am a special lady, They say I am retarded, Because I fart alot in front of men. Men like to call me challenged because I fart stinky ones in front of them. Alot of normal intelligent people pick on me because I am special and I fart alot. Im special thats what my professor told me I belong in a tech school because I am retarded person because I pooped three times in her class and slammed the door on my way in and out. I am sorry but I had the runs professor, But, She always thought I was special. Just by looking @ me people just take one look and call me retarded and a moron and a village idiot. Some intelligent people like to steal my money like eighty dollars out of my purse because their dirt poor and they need to buy their passion tea from starbucks, and, their broccolli and cheddar soup (Panera Brand) @ target and call me a paranoid schizophrenic retard hermaphrodite, She s special I not allowed to have sex or feel that I am smart because normal intelligent people always pick on me because I am retarded and done for the day got 16,000..00 it was just a gift.
I tell people that I want to become a computer engineer, and, they clear their throat and look and me like I am severly retarded w/ a delusional outlook on life. Thats just sad.
But when your daughter goes to stony brook university and it takes her ten times to pass a nursing test thats scary for her patients and herself.
