An Archeological Atrocity

Jerusalem Post Editorial

Jerusalem is one of the most
archeologically rich cities in the world. Within Jerusalem,
perhaps the most mysterious area from an archeological
point of view is the Temple Mount. This month, the Wakf
(Moslem trust) dug a hole 30 meters square and 12 meters
deep into the Temple Mount and dumped tons of the
excavated material by the truckload into the Kidron Valley.

According to the Antiquities Authority, the Wakf committed
an "archeological crime" by using bulldozers to cut into a
place that archeologists might have probed with
toothbrushes. Although much of the damage has been done
and cannot be reversed, this damage will be significantly
exacerbated if Israel does not properly protect and
excavate the tons of fill that now sit alongside a garbage
dump.

Personally, I would be more upset if the local Steak and Shake got bulldozed.

Wouldn't bother me a bit if they did it to the Vatican... as the Vatican is sitting on a Pagan Shrine they tore down in order to build the Vatican. So I'm not sure how it would be a crime to tear down the Vatican.

As for the Temple... they've been doing things like that for centuries! The Knights Templar are said to have excavated parts of it, found treasure (as the story goes)... and there is proof that excavations were done during that time. This isn't the first time these things have been done. Though, I have read some compelling evidence that shows where a lot of them are digging, thinking it's the Temple... isn't THE Temple at all... but housing that was attached to the Temple.

I would say, it would be pretty important to them.

They're expecting the greatest earthquake ever and it's right there at the Dead Sea fault and when Jesus Christ returns His Feet hit the Mount of Olives and it splits down the center and they say, we are waiting for that big one and that could be the return of Christ. But the most exciting thing, beyond that, is that the Jews are asking for all of the things the Vatican has from the old temples. Why? Because they have built the replica of the exact temple 269,000 square feet by the dead sea! And they are putting everything in it and getting all the Cohen's. For they are the Levites, they're prepared to do sacrifice so that when the real one is built, the one in which antichrist sits, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 and says he's god, Daniel 11:36, it will be ready. It's that close. Then Christ comes and sits in it permanently. Ezekiel 40 to 44.

If that's true, it might in the future be a vast loss, if someone rich doesn't sponsor archeologists to attempt to salvage something from it. I suspect that archeologists of all people are more than familiar with the destruction of past glories, but if they are to enjoy the future, they can't live on air, and they can't fly there in outrage, someone will have to sponsor their studies, living & travel costs.

But that's not your question - what would I do if someone bulldozed the Vatican ... ?

I'd hope that the driver of the bulldozer was paid union scale.
I would question the archeological values of one of the richest states in the world. I would wonder whether the fact that that state has an official birthrate of zero says anything about their concern for the future of the world.

But then I do that anyway : )

If someone was to bulldoze the vatican? I'd probably give them the keys to the buldozer!

It isn't the building that makes a church. The word church is translated from ekklesia - the called out.

That always means people. The people are the house of God, not the building.

The vatican I would not be sorry for in the least as it could feed many millions of people with the gold it has in it. As for the temple of the Jewish nation, it is very important to them but apparntly not to all peoples that are in the land. If they are going to do this kind of thing, they need to get the ones that can do it right and save the things that need to be saved for all to see rather than just dispose of it all. So you ask about two different places that are very far apart and very different values.

"first temple to the Jews?" There is no such thing as a "temple to the Jews." If there were, it wouldn't be the Vatican. The Vatican is the seat of government of the Roman Catholic Church. Get your facts straight.

The Vatican is not nearly as important as the God we worship. Even if the Vatican and the Pope no longer existed, the Christian worship of God and Jesus as the Christ would continue. The Vatican, the art, the statues, and even the archaeological finds are nice and valuable but not nearly as valuable as our faith.

The Vatican?

unfortunately i would have to throw myself in front of the bulldozers, 'cause, the pope lives at the Vatican, and this pope happens to be my homie, straight from my hometown Munich. that being the fact, i feel he might be able to put a good word in for me, since i am not catholic but Lutheran and unfortunately the Lutheran church has no purgatory after death, so we have no chance to make up for our sins after we die, consequently we go straight to hell. plus, the pope, so i understand is the direct hot line to god, so why mess with him. from time to time i need to present my request, wish list if you will and i doubt he will pass my requests on to the lord, if he has to read it sitting in the rubble of his palace...go easy on the man. and where is he gonna move to then? from the Sistine chapel to the Hilton, or worse, motel 6?

It matters. It's disrespectful and senseless to destroy a landmark, and side from being a religious structure, the Temple is a part of our history, just as the Statue of Liberty is, just like the Twin Towers were. Is it ever just 'okay' to wreck that sort of beauty and heritage? I don't think so.
