I think it's more of a statement on the purity of Christ. But what do I know.

Incorrect. Christians also believe that sex is sacred!
Mary is called "The Virgin Mary" because she was a virgin at the time of the conception and birth of Jesus Christ. The fact that she had never had sex is not a metaphor for a "perfect life", it is just a biological point of the miracle surrounding Jesus' entrance into the world.
Many Christians believe that after Jesus' birth (and the 40 day waiting period following childbirth) Joseph and Mary enjoyed a NORMAL MARRIED LIFE, including sex and more children.
Sex was, after all, God's idea!

Possible, because sex before marriage is sin, Mary is an example who did not have sex, as she was never married and yet had a baby.

To show the miracle of Christ's birth. It was through a woman that sin entered the world. So too through a woman and no man that the Redeemer came.
