Most people believe because they were taught to believe as children. But many believe because of personal experience.
All of those are potential reasons. Some continue to believe because it gives them comfort, or an explanation, or out of fear, or out of habit.
But faith in the divine is not inherently at odds with logic, or science, and just because someone believes doesn't mean they are ignorant or close-minded. Those are all independent of each other.
Many believe because of personal experience. Because they have touched or been touched by the divine, however they perceive or define that. For them, it is first-hand knowledge, like knowing what the inside of your house looks like. So, it depends.

Ja, we can go over and over with this...if i did the same question bacwards...Why don´t believe in God? and i could mention very similar reasons to those you wrote:
(a)It serves as some kind of comfort to them that there is not a higher being
(b)They are scared of the repercussions, so they choose not believe
(d)They can't see things in a different light or on a greater scale
(e)Ignorance or lack of knowledge about how universe functions (if they really know how it works they would believe there has to be a God)
(f)etc.

The greatest proof that God does exist are the poltergeist and the dreams that occur to many individuals in their sleep having relevance to future events. God can't reveal itself, because when God revealed a part of itself to Moses it burned a part of the Mountain into ashes, that is the quality of God. All evil peoples have been defeated by righteous people throughout history, because righteousness is rewarded and protected by God at certain degrees.
In the Quran it says atheists are deaf, dumb, and blind to the signs of God in everything, this is so true. The atheists out of their hatred for the bigotry of Christians against non-christians, stubornly maintain their disbelief, though there is no reason why not to be an agnostic or a Deist that believes God created amoeba and left it to evolve.

He gave me breath. He made me, and has taken care of me, and my family for the past 18 years here in MI. He made the earth. The beauty is all around us. It just couldn't have happen. If God didn't create the earth then how come the ocean comes up just so far on the land, and not cover the whole earth? Why do the stars hang in the sky the way they do? How can things come up new every year. Look at how the body is made. It just couldn't have fallen into place. God is awesome. We can't see the wind, but we know that it is there.

I believe in God because of my Seiko watch. My watch-- which is just a copy of the laws of time in the universe-- has a maker, Seiko. So, if the copy has a maker then ( obviously) the original must have a maker too. Does this seem logical to you?
No, I am not scared into believing God. On the contrary, because of God I am still alive. He gives me the air to breath, the food that I eat, etc. Many of his creations are copied by man.
But, I really am amazed how come people honor the makers of those copies while rejecting authorship of the orginals.

OTHER: Because there is a God who came in the flesh to pay the price of the sin I HAVE COMMITTED.
Funny, I sinned AGAINST Him, and He died FOR me.
What an awesome God I serve. The question isn't why BELIEVE in God...because that is easy, in fact you are undermining your own intelligence by NOT believing... it should be why REPENT for God.
Here are some reasons people don't believe:
1. Too arrogant to admit they are in sin
2. They love their sin too much
3. Duped by so called "science" evolution "pseudo-science"
4. Witnessed "christians" act like morons
5 . Blinded by the god of this world
6. Love making excuses
7. Don't give God the chance
I could go on but you get the point

I believe in God because it makes perfect sense. I have seen first hand the wonderful things He will do for your life once you repent and serve Him instead of this realm. This life is a mere speck compared to eternity, this life is a warm up for the real deal. I don't think so little of myself that all I have is this one life and then I am done forever. I am a child of God and will be living forever in Heaven with Him!! He is The Creator of all things and that is the biggest scale there is!

I keep thinking that before monotheism came about....people believed in many Gods....why?....what was the purpose? To understand the world around them that they didn't understand? Such as the earth, life, the cosmos and most important..death. And although today we understand the way the earth works, cosmos and the creation of life.....we do not know death....what is beyond that supposed light...God is how we face death....as well as the hope that there is reason for our conscious existence....
God is the answer to the unanswerable....

A better question may be why not believe in God? I do not believe because of any repercussions if I don't. In fact the bible says that Satan and his angels believe and tremble so believing is not near enough to be saved. It is the turning your life over to Jesus that counts, not just believing that God exists. If we cannot trust Him to take care of us, who can we really trust?

A lot of people believe because they want a purpose. A god gives a pupose, something to strive for.
That is why evolution is so feared. It takes away purpose, it takes away meaning. It makes you just a random result. A nothing.
A god gives them self worth, something to hold close and responsible.
And to answer what we don't know, like where we came from.
