Joseph Carpenter was Jesus' "step dad." Both he and Mary can trace their ancestry all the way back to king David, fulfilling the prophecy about the Messiah also being the "Son of David."

Mary was moved upon by the Sprit of God who caused her to be pregnant with Jesus.... Joseph is the step father...who did not know or have sex with Mary until after Jesus was born. It was a creative miracle of God that cause the conception of Jesus Christ. God is His Father, because the sperm came creatively from God. The blood line is always checked by the Fathers blood, not the mothers. If they did a DNA of Joseph and Jesus, they would discover Joseph had nothing to do with it. He just provided a home and safety for Mary, when society would have stoned her for being pregnant out of wedlock.

Joseph contributed nothing to the formation of Jesus' body. He was the man who protected Mary (his wife) while she was pregnant, and raised Jesus as his own son.

Jesus is called the "Son of God" because Mary became pregnant by a special work of the Holy Spirit, while she was still a virgin.

Contrary to some people's beliefs, there was NO mistaking where babies came from in 4 BCE. EVERYBODY knew it took sex to make babies, even Bronze Age teenage girls. While many pagan religions believed that "the gods" occasionally got young girls pregnant, it was always a "god" in "human form" sleeping with the young girl--no virginity question there!
