I am in the process of cutting an old pickup truck in half so that I can use the bed portion as a trailer. When I register it, would I use the existing VIN number from the old truck or would I be issued a new one for a homemade trailer?

u will have to get a reconstructed or modified title,,,,the vin only covers the original vehicle and not any modifications,,,,it will be totally separate issue

Take the old vin with you and ask the clerk,. It will have to be identified somehow. Since the rear of the truck doesn't have a VIN tag attached to it, you could juse stamp a serial number on it.

Vehicle Identification Number is for a Vehicle only. No motor = Serial Number. You need a new number for the trailer.
