Many people here obviously don't know what Melatonin is and are confusing it was MELANIN which gives us our skin tone and pigment. Melatonin is a natural hormone with antioxidant properties produced int eh pineal gland. It's involved in numerous biological functions including circadian rhythm, sleep, stress response, aging, and immunity.
I'm a night shift nurse and I take Melatonin each morning when I come home to go to sleep because studies have shown night shift workers have higher rates of cancer and Melatonin has been shown to shrink tumor growth.

There is no dosage listed on these articles, however with my Melatonin, they are 3mg sublingual pills (dissolve under the tongue for quick absorption) and the bottle says not to take more the 3mg in a 24 hr period. I was unable to find the effects of too much Melatonin supplements but I imagine they would have a sedative effect, but since they are a naturally occurring substance a few extra pills probably wouldn't do much. Still, I wouldn't take more than 6mg per day.

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the pineal gland. It is also a popular supplement, usually used for sleeping disorders. As with most supplements, it is not known if melatonin is safe for use during pregnancy. Is Melatonin Safe for Pregnant Women? Even though melatonin is a "natural" product, this does not automatically mean that it is safe for use during pregnancy. Melatonin is a hormone, and many hormones have effects on other hormones (including pregnancy hormones), usually through complex mechanisms. It is not known how melatonin may affect a pregnant woman or a developing fetus. Since the risks of using melatonin are not known and since insomnia is not a life-threatening condition, it is probably a good idea to avoid the supplement during pregnancy. Final Thoughts If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to ask your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement. The two of you can consider the possible risks and benefits of using melatonin in your particular situation, as well as any other treatment alternatives. Your healthcare provider can also be a good resource for safe ways to deal with insomnia during pregnancy.

Yes, but, why Melatonin? That's kind of silly! That's like saying hey, I want to OD today, I'm going to take a bottle of vitamins! Maybe you should talk to the guy above who has the Masters in Psych.

No, unless you took the whole bottle, then you might get sick. The more you take it though, the less it works. You can actually OD on water, too much of anything is not good. The real question is the level of safety. You would need to take an extremely large amount to OD lethally wise.

Anything is possible with enough taken. That melatonin works okay for sleep but I find it gives me bad dreams so I stay away from it.

as others have said and it's common sense; one can od on anything really. So since melatonin is something, sure you could but I don't think it would be anywhere as easy as a thousand and one other substances.

3 mg tablets shouldn't be an over-dose but you will probably get the same results with less mg. And, you might not want to take it each and every night, skip some nights sometimes.

It is possible to overdose on anything. Everything you put into your body causes a reaction. It would however probably make you sick and you would vomit all over yourself before it actually killed you.
Why?

If you are even thinking about it, please call the suicide prevention hotline, or go to the ER and tell them that you are depressed and that you need treatment.
