Good grief. You wouldn't wnat to depend on Answers for an accurate reponse.

YES. PLANTS NEED OXYGEN.

Plants respire exactly the same way that animals do. If they don't have oxygen plants will suffocate and die within a few hours.

Plants do produce oxygen when they have access to light, but they also burn oxygen constantly, 24/7/ Doesn't matter whether they are producing oxygen at the time, they are also burning oxygen.

I have no idea what that nonsense Hanumaster just posted is. Respirtaion by defintion consumes oxygen. It seems that Hanumaster has just overturned 200 years of biological knowledge by discovering a form of reducing respiration.

Plants need oxygen.
One of the reasons is photorespiration.
Oxygen during photorespiration forms ATP releasing CO2.

definitely all living organisms need oxygen to live.
then you can ask me why we should plant trees since it consume carbon di oxide during the process known as photosynthesis This process will take place only in presence of light just to produce starch
but during night time plants and trees need oxygen for respiration
you might be come across some stories which indicate that a ghost from the tree killed person when they were sleeping under the tree (during night time) scientifically it is because of this reason that the oxygen is needed for both human and trees at night time due to the lack of oxygen only they died this is a small example which shows that plants too need oxygen for their living

Plants Use Oxygen Too

If you are like most people, you know that plants give off oxygen. But, there is a problem with knowing that fact. Sometimes knowledge of one thing can interfere with knowing something else. That's what happens in this case.

People who know that plants give off oxygen often assume that plants must not also take it in. But this assumption is wrong. All living things--plants included-- take in oxygen from the air.

Plant cells have special structures called chloroplasts--named for the chlorophyll they contain. Plants use chlorophyll to capture energy from the sun, then they use that energy to make food in a process called photosynthesis.

The food is made by combining small molecules of water with small molecules of carbon dioxide to make larger molecules of starch and sugar. (Oxygen is released as a byproduct of photosynthesis.) The starch and sugar are stored by the plant then used by us when we eat plants.

But feeding us is not why a plant goes to all the trouble of making starch and sugar. Plants use the food they make to fuel their own growth and activities. And that's where oxygen comes in again.

To "burn" fuel requires oxygen. Animals breathe in oxygen and use it to extract energy from food. This process of using oxygen to release energy from food is called respiration.

Plants use oxygen in exactly the same way! But when you have lots of phytoplankton growing in water that's too warm to hold much oxygen, there is little oxygen left for fish. That's why redness near the shore in a SeaWiFS image is not a good thing, especially in warm water.

all living things need oxygen to breathe

plants at night do use up o2 left over from daylight photosynthesis or take o2 from immediate surroundings to help meet its energy needs this is called cellular respiration.
