I would buy a non-American car like a Toyota. I have had a Camry for 10 years, bought it used for $15,000 and I have never had a days trouble with it. They can go for 200,000 miles. My husband also has a Toyota truck and same thing. He now has 194,000 miles on it and has never had to put any money into it except for basic stuff like brakes, etc. Also like the Hyundai's though time will tell how long they hold up. The new ones aren't that expensive and they have the greatest warranty out there.

You can get a Yaris for about 13,000 and about 40 mpg.
You could get a Ford Focus for about 14-15,000 and about 35 mpg.
I'd go with the Yaris

Discover your options with buying privately perhaps...used car sales markets [for both buying and trade-ins] are way out of proportion these days.
l recently had a four year old car [original owner] that for health reasons l could no longer drive anymore....
l paid nearly $20,000 brand new....and four years later the salesmen only would offer me $2,000.
Needless to say....l told them where to go...and sold my car privately for a much higher value...and to someone that knew l regularly serviced, maintained etc etc...my car...and got a much better price in the end than by sharks that wud have given me $2,000 and sold it for at least five times the price!
Everyone was happy in the end...the new purchasers were rapt in their excellent buy...and l was happy to put a good deposit on a new car that better suited my purposes.

I'll give three answers.
A Toyota Corolla if you want near or over 40 MPG.
A Honda Accord if you want something to drive with low maintenance.
A BMW 3 series if you want to have fun and maybe spend a little more on maintenance.
Check out http://www.cars.com for some bargains in your zip code.

OoOoOoOoH... Get a Yaris! You could totally trick it out for that and they get close to 400 mpg.
I love mine!
