The invention of the Bible. Because it is a tool that rulers used to control and manipulate populations. They used it to elevate them to a status of unquestionable and unscrupulous power and to justify horrific acts. Religion is still used today in very much the same way. It brainwashed people into dismissing reason and common sense, and abandoning their own moral principals for the ones they are told to have. Precepts like obey the church and you will get your rewards in heaven helped to subdue the will of the people to fight for justice and allow many atrocities to happen. There is no high authority, no omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being, and believing there is inhibits progress of human civilization.
