Van Gogh is a little behind the Impressionist, history books usually catogrize him as Expressionist, but in my opinion, there is a fuzzy area here because Van Gogh's Style is truely unique.

Van Gogh was not an impressionist.
He is generally regarded as a Post-Impressionist although some make the argument that he was the first Expressionist. I think Post-Imprssionist is the best way to classify him, if you really need to classify, always a dangerous exercise.

Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne are generally considered to be the leading Post Impressionists who tried to make a more museum quality style of an amateurish one. His work led to Expressionism, and some classify him as the first in this style.

While Vincent is included in many books on Impressionism, I think he was not purposely a student of the properties of light nor did he paint to capture some light effect. Rather, he by happenstance painted at the time of the Impressionists and the beginnings of the Expressionists. He was a loner though he strove for companionship and acceptance. First he recorded carefully and studiously, drawing with conviction that with practice he would become accomplished. He migrated to plein air painting and adapted to the challenges of rapidly changing light and weather. He used strong impasto colors because that is how he eventually saw the world and had little time to carefully mix and blend. His mind grew quick, darting, impatient, angry and so became his work. His "style" was unique, and placing him in with Impressionists or Expressionists implies he was part of a movement. He was not.
