theres no viable reason in todays world not to have a military. As large as we are and with as many interests its absolutely necessary to maintain a strong defense. People criticizing the military are the same ones who criticize police and lawyers. No one want them until you need them.

Most opponents of a standing army believe that we would have a truer democracy if everyone was a member of a militia and therefore equally responsible for the defense of the nation. However, this approach is not workable due to the discipline and training required of modern military forces. There are also fringe groups who think that all military force is bad, but these are not creditable.

To some , having a military is a waste of money that could be better spent on them . More money for Social programs , college grants , ect.
truth is, the biggest Social program we have is the Military , have a disaster , a plague , enemy attack , a flood , who shows up , the military .
Need 300 helicopters to evacuate people , don't go to Sears , call
the military .
Yep , some people are so selfish, that they'd disband the military
just to split up the money .
But , you won't find them putting themselves in harms way.

Not having a worthy army and navy is what got forced us into the War of 1812 (US was unprepared to defend itself and its merchant vessels against British and French forces, as well as pirates).
Whether to have a standing army and navy is what caused the Democratic-republican party to split.
Consider this--the US is one of the few countries in the world where military service is voluntary. Most other countries require military service. So the liberals and such should count their blessings.
Even Switzerland, a country neutral since the Congress of Vienna in 1816, has a standing army as a deterrent to invasion. And their citizen army serves not for one year or two, but for a period of twenty years (I believe it's two weeks service every other year). They are also required to bring their firearms home, as well as other equipment, and to keep them in a state of readiness in the event of an invasion.

A military is neccessary, but a military-industrial complex is not. Too many supposed private sector companies are entwined with our military and use them as a form of corporate welfare. All these retired military leaders go on working at Boeing, Haliburton, Raytheon, etc.. and run-up overpriced contracts. War is good for them, it causes a huge surge in demand.
The soldiers, most from the lower/working class strata pay the ultimate price. These last wars are helping oil and even auto manufacturers as well. Too many corporations use our miliarty to drive profits.

You are completely correct. I saw a bumper sticker today that said "Army of none. Non-violence=peace" Ahhh, yes. That little philosophy would have worked great in WWII huh? Hey look at all this peace! What's that on the horizon? A Panzer! Oh well, they know we don't have an army, maybe they'll just go around us and look for someone else to fight. Look people, either you fight for your rights or they get taken away. It really is that simple. In this world there will always be someone ready to take away what is rightfully yours and you will have to defend it with maximum violence. That is the ONLY language tryants understand.

i think we should have a military...cause if we burn all our guns and pick flowers....thats when the aliens would invade...
im not against having a military but i am against using the military for stupid reasons ( im going to belittle terrorism and the war so so sorry)
you have a younger sister - she goes into your room thinking you stole one of her barbies and tears the room apart (she found nothing). then you come home and get pissed off cause your room is a wreck and you cant find your remote control car...so you go into her room and tear i apart thinking it was in her room (didn't find it) then SHE finds her room messed up and then you get in a huge (physical) fight -- and you fall down and land on the remote control car you thought you lost, and you sister found the barbie doll on the kitchen floor.
sorry if the story made no sense, but im tired - the point is we are fighting when it was ourselves that lost something, or made the mistake...stop pointing fingers and trying to make other people suffer (this goes to the whole world)

There is no reason we shouldn't have a military. Anyone who thinks that has no idea what they are talking about. Even people on this board aren't that dumb.
