I'm a Lutheran and I heard somewhere that Catholics believe in it.

Purgatory is where, according to Catholics, people who didn't accept Christ because they couldn't, go after death. It's in between heaven and hell. It would be for like disabled people, or people that never knew of the Gospel. They are given a chance in purgatory to accept Jesus.

In my humble opinion, it is simply one more pathetic attempt to define the undefinable.

Peace and love be with ye my brother.

Yes, I'm Catholic and we believe in purgatory as a place where some people go to be purified before they enter heaven; once in purgatory, you can not go to hell... you just have to wait for heaven, and no one knows how long that will be. Our Bible is a bit different from yours... the concept of purgatory is derived from some chapters of Maccabees.

thank you for asking nicely and hopefully you will get to the asnwers from those that do believe it in.... this question was asked before and there were some great asnwers. i won't put them here but....

Rcc (& all Christians) have an assurance of salvation if they are saved and faithful and keep God's commandments. but to enter heaven one must be perfect and holy for nothing unclean shall enter it (Rev 21:27, Is 4:4, Mal 3:2-4). this is the cleansing & purifying of any sin's that remain after death - the purification. St Puals teaches that each man's works will become manifest...it will be revealed with fire & the fire will test each man works. the word is burned up, he will suffer though he himself will be saved but only through fire. (1 Cor 3:13, 15). For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ so that each may receie good or evil according to what he has done for the Body. (2 Cor 5:10).

in the simpliest of terms, Purgatory is like a waiting room and you're just waiting your "turn" to stand before God's judgement. No one knows how long the wait or how long it takes while you are being judged. that is also why Rcc pray for the "happy repose fo the soul" - your prayer might reach God just while the soul is standing before Him in judgement.

there are a variety of Scripture verses and, again, i won't confiscate their asnwers but.... go back a few pages : )

Again, sorry for all those who claim to know what the Rcc believe in and explain it in such derogatory terms when they are completely ignorant to the reasoning.

Catholics believe in purgatory. I do not. They believe it is a place that people go when they die who have not been all bad... a holding place. Then the catholics have to go and pay and buy candles so the priest can pray them out of pergatory. It is a doctine based on teaching in the Apocrypha, thoses added books in the catholic bible that are not accepted by the protestants. They are rejected by Lutherans and others because you do not get to heaven based on what you do or what others do for you, but by the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus and our asking Him to forgive us. If we fail to accept it here... it won't help us in eternity....the decision must be made now.

Nothing unclean can enter heaven. If you go to purgatory you're saved but you have to be cleansed of your minor sins this is done by God's burning love. To see oneself as one is can be really painful sometimes, what do you think of really seeing your self in God's light would be.

Jesus speaks about purgatory "you won't get out until you have payed the last.....""he who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven neither in this life or in the next...."
Paul does too "saved as through fire"
The books of the Maccabees speak about praying for the departed so that they can be loosened from their sins.

Okay lets see if we can fix this problem.
First of all Heaven was before any Religion was born on the market...... let's please keep Religion out of the picture. Thanks

The Catholics are close, like so many others religions, they are all off a bit on somethings.

There's Hell, there's earth... to where you can be stuck, because of negativity, as a ghost. There's Heaven, purgatory is in Heaven, that's where when you get to Heaven you'll be wearing either a robe of righteousness, or a gown. If you have the robe on when you arrive good job you get to see God, it you have the gown on, God has spared you, cause God is compassionate, merciful... eventually you would be able to see God, they have teaching, like classes that you'll have to go to learn. God is merciful, he giving you a chance than to send you to Hell, God gave you every chance on earth, now he doing it in Heaven.
This is true to the best of my knowledge.... I know three people that either died and came back from Heaven, that seen it all.

Purgatory (Lat., "purgare", to make clean, to purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions...

Don't believe what the Catholics say...... There is absolutely no purgatory. When we die, we will go either to hell or heaven to spend eternity with God or without God.

They say purgatory is a place in limbo. Not heaven or hell. People must pray for your soul in order for you to go to heaven. That's the way I heard it.

Puratory is place where you soul is temporarily left. It between heaven and hell. I don't think this a real catholic doctrine, it could a christian doctrine.
In some cases, we are in puratory right now but our souls are intact from the physical body.
I believe like on member said it comes from Dante's Inferno.
