My 2 yo English Setter Can't seem to grow the long hair under his tummy, but when I look up pics of ES's they all have long hair. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

No. There are good ones and not so good ones, but there is only one standard. Show dogs tend to have more coat. LOL! I don't know WHAT the first poster is going on about!

Probably nothing you are doing wrong, just genetics. Feed a high quality food (not Science Diet or Iams).

There are two distinct types of English Setter. Bench (show) setters, Lavaracks, tend to be larger with longer coats ("feathering") and heavy flews (lips). These are usually registed with AKC. This is the type of dog that you would see at a dog show. Because of a profusion of coat, this type requires a lot more grooming.

The field-type dogs, Llewellins, tend to be smaller, have less pendulous lips, less coat and fewer spots. Often they are registered with FDSB (Field Dog Stud Book). This is only a generalization as there are many big, heavy-coated, droopy-lipped field setters! Both types of English Setters share the easy-going, loving personality that makes the breed so appealing.

It is probably genetics. If you bought from a breeder that shows confirmation dogs, you would more likely get that type of coat. Most around are more towards the field type - they tend to have a lighter build & less coat (that would catch burrs in the field).

Unless your dog is itching and losing hair (then I would take it to the vet, this is the typical bad time of year for allergies), this is the most likely explanation.
