I don't know but it's aggravating, just like when you ask for only a LITTLE ice and they give you the entire glass of ice with just a little soda.

Anyway, I'm too cheap to pay the outrageous prices restaurants charge for soda. I just get water most of the time.

Because the ice fills the glass and that way they save money by giving you less soda. Next time, just send it back. They can't say no if you are a customer.

I think they fill the glasses on auto-pilot! It is habit, and I am sure that with a tip depending on the level of service, the servers don't do it on purpose.
I have the same problem (ice aggravates asthma), and I politely ask for no ice if I am brought a drink with it.
Try not to be rude! Servers handle your food after all....!

It depends on which resturant you are in.I wait tables in L.A. and it's super fast paced.Sometimes you ask the bus boy to deliver a drink if you are "slammed".Some times the communication gets crossed, lots of us are trying to work together to make you happy,so in reality ,we can be satisfied too.Believe me,it's nothing personal, usually, unless you are so hard to deal with, you get treated like the spoiled child that just can't be fixed and we move onto a quieter, genteler situation.Any way, most of the ice and water that you drink in resturaunts go through a filter system, this is not a 3rd world country.Oh.yeh.if it is a dental issue, let your server know, most people will respect your pain.

Perhaps you weren't loud enough. When they bring you a glass not the way you ordered it return it and ask for another. They make more money when the put less pop in your glass so my guess is they are hoping that you don't choose to be picky over ice in your glass. Perhaps they don't realize that you have sensitive teeth.

Make the server go back and get you a soda with no ice.

If you tell them no ice and they give you ice then send it back and tell them you want what you ordered. Your the paying customer and should get what you ask for (unless of course it's just completely impossible).

They want to save money on the drink and ice is cheaper. They don't care if you say no ice. Refuse to drink it, ask for another one and tell them you're allergic to ice.

They did not listen carefully. Sometimes when you place an order that is a little out of the ordinary you need to repeat yourself to make sure the server was listening.
