There are 2 big reasons people get sick more in cold weather.

1) viruses, which are the usual cause of sore throats, and always the cause of common cold, thrive in cool environment. That's why the cold/most sore throats are limited to the upper airways - they are slightly cooler than the rest of the body.

2) When it's cold outside, people tend to crowd together, making the spread of germs much easier.

Anytime that you catch the flu or colds, it's due to germs that are airborne. That's why you should always wash your hands before eating. From what my doctor has told me is that a person can run in the snow naked and not catch a cold. But if your immune system is not strong, you are more than likely to contract a cold or flu from someone else. As for sore throats, it is the same with a cold or flu, except for when your tonsils are "swelling".

But I am no doctor, so you can always call your doctor or call a nurses line and ask them. Ask around, because you will see that most people have a difference of opinions.

Being out in the cold doesn't mean you are gonna get sick. Your throat can get dry if you are outside talking to someone or whatever, cause the dry air gets in through your mouth, but that doesn't mean you are gonna get a sore throat. The only way you can get ill is, if you are out in the cold not wearing a jacket or coat, then your temperature drops. You can also get frost bite.

Actually the heat is what causes sickness, not the cold. Most germ, bacteria or viruses can not survive under 40 degrees.
The reason people get sick in the winter is because we turn on our furnaces, stay in more, shut the windows, and basically breathe the same dirty air over and over again.

You can get a cold at anytime of the season. You have to really bundle up and remember not to keep your hair or you'll get sick.
