It means your request is being reviewed and will be answered shortly.

If it was a request to add someone as a friend/contact to your messenger... then it means they are provisionally added until they sign in and decide if they want to be added or not. If they decline, you will receive a message and they will be deleted from your messenger. If they accept, then the 'request pending' notice will go from beside their name.
