I managed a homeless shelter for several months during the winter in Anchorage Alaska many years ago and about 200 people were there every night to escape the extreme cold nights. Some of them were military vets from WWII and many were indigenous people in Anchorage from tiny rural villages. Many were educated and had job histories, but the majority, more than 1/2 were people who were mentally ill and unable to hold even menial minimum wage jobs, but not mentally ill enough for the state psych services to put them in an institution to take care of them. Very Sad!! Some of the others were just unable to clean up and wear good enough clothing to even interview or be hired by someone. Even when some of them managed to get even a minimum wage job, they were unlikely to keep it because they had no home to go to after work and no way to always look and smell clean. Without a social network of friends or family to help someone get back on their feet, some people sink to a very low place and may never be able to climb back up and out into "normal" society. I learned that I need to be compassionate about many of them and try to understand how difficult and horrible their lives might actually be. On the other hand, there are those few out there who have homes and resources, but enjoy trying to con the compassionate people in hopes of making some easy money. Use your best judgment and don't assume all of these folks are too lazy to find employment. Thanks for reading my opinion!

There are some homeless people out there who are unable to read or write to fill out an application. Even if they get a friend to fill out the app, they are unable to usually work since they can't read instrux., etc. Others are physically or mentally ill, and incapable of working. I don't always have $ to give either, but I always greet them with a friendly smile. Lest the old saying goes "Try walking a mile in their shoes". That is of course if they have shoes.

It's hard to get a job...if you were hiring, would you hire them?? Most of those people have had very hard luck. Yes, some of them are lazy and so forth, but lighten up. Be thankful you have what you do. You are obviously not broke if you have internet access and can afford to sit around on Yahoo Answers. Try helping...not criticizing!

Unless you've seen a movie or read of book of their life there's no way to tell if their situation is in or out of their hands, so it's safe to assume they've had it pretty hard.

Perhaps because they have mental diseases, and no homes to shower/bathe/ or have interview clothes at... that would get them a job....
