It is certainly neccessary. I know plenty of atheists who do just as good if not better work than theists. So why does your congregation force the issue of charity upon you. I am willing to guess that it's to make them feel a little bit better about lying to you.

Which is better charity or no charity?....Does it matter the reason that you help others?

You started your question with the word, religion and then stopped. Are you in agreement with others that believe that practicing a religion is based on man's theologies and not the teaching of Our Lord Jesus Christ?

You also mention that you have people in your acquaintance that are atheists who do great works of charity as some other people who share in the belief that there is a God who created all things and us as well.

I am at a lost as to what you are trying to say? I know one thing for sure and that's that this country is a Christian based country and that charity, or love for ones fellow man is paramount in the lives of each of us.

There is an exception to every rule though.><>

No congregation I know of forces anyone to do charity work. Some people want to show God's love to others. We all feel better when we help others, regardless of any religious beliefs.

no charity doesn't make up for anything. however in the Rcc you're taught, once you're saved and have accepted Christ, you are to do works of charity and such. however this isn't for any point system, rather it's what a Christian does. just as works without faith is dead, so is faith without works. but you're not forced into anything, it's what you do, out of love for your fellow man, just as Christ would do -- whatsoever you do to the least of My brother that you do unto Me.

you can't just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk (and walking in an action just like works ; )

First of all "Charity is the pure love of Christ." What is the first and greatest commandment? it is to Love the Lord with all your heart, might, mind and strength, and the second is like unto it; Love thy neighbor as thyself. If we say there is no God then we deceive ourselves. When we do charity work we are doing as the Lord has commanded us; this holds true for the atheists in the world as well. As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.

the only thing that can save you from living a life of a lie is asking forgiveness from God. no work on your part will save you because you will do wrong all throughout your life.

as for the charity-work...i don't think the congregation forces it, and if they do they shouldn't...but isn't that a good thing to do anyway?
