I think the word "anniversary" is the wrong word when describing a bad event like 9-11. "Remembrance" is better. To me: anniversary is a word that describes a good event, like a wedding anniversary. Not like 9-11 or the columbine shootings. What do you think??

You have a very good point esthetically speaking. I agree that it sounds better to use the word anniversary for "happy" events. However, the dictionary lists for its very first definition of anniversary: the yearly recurrence of the date of a past event. So, it is an acceptable reference.
