My son recently had surgery (Meckle's Diverticula). This has been stemming since birth and I was wondering if there is any assistance that I can get to help with the medical bills since this is a "birth defect?"

you can try to get SSI through Social Security. If you get it it will qualify for Medicaid. Even if it is not life long they will give it to you for a while and then reevaluate in a few months. It is possible

Isn't the March of Dimes committed to assistance for people with birth defects? You might start there, anyway, to ask what is available. Certainly, if he has unusually high medical bills, you might look to special agencies without feeling guilty. There may be something from the government, but I would not know what it is. They tend to be specific to how much income you have, not how much expense.

And what of your medical insurance? Have they kicked in anything?

Children are born with birth defects every day. Your insurance should help, but no, I don't know of any programs that assist parents of children with birth defects. It's just unfortunate.

Not for Meckle's.
Sorry.
2% of the population have this "defect."
Perhaps you could have put him on Medicaid... but this isn't considered a life long problem like that of CP, or Down's.
