My parents just had new baby and I love my new (and only) brother dearly. I am 15 years old and there is a big space (in terms of age) between my brother and myself. I have been wanting a sibling for a long time.. well anyways, by the time I graduate high school and leave for college, my brother will only be four years old. I really want to be close to my brother. Should I choose a college close to home or a more prestigious college farther away that is better for my own future?

What a kind and loving brother you are to be considering all this.Your baby brother is extremely lucky to have you as his big brother. You have to do what you feel is best and makes you the most happy, you still have so much time to think about this. I wish you well.

That's a tough question. My brother graduated from high school the year I was born: I was 6 months old. He went off to college, but only a couple hours from home. After he graduated, he got married and then became a missionary, leaving for Indonesia when I was about 5 or 6. He didn't come back for 5 years. I'm 35 now, and am still not very close to that brother. Because he was never around he became almost like this fantastical creature that didn't really exist.

My advice to you would be to go off to the best college for you, but once your brother is 4 or 5, try to spend some time with him - don't just diappear.

There is nothing like the experience of living away at school. I'd recommend you look into schools that are about an hour or so away - you can go home for weekends or even on a weeknight if needed to babysit or something without a big hassle, but you're just far enough that you need to live there.

Plus, with not seeing you every single day, it will make your time together with your brother that much more special..

If you can get into a top school do it. I am in almost same situation, I have a twin brother but I also have a younger sibling that I am 14 years older. I stayed close to home for my first two years and my twin brother didnt. There was literally no difference between the relationship that me and my twin had with our younger brother because we both would spend time with him. So go to best school but come home whenever possible and spend time with your younger brother. As long as you are there for him and he knows that then he wont care that much and once he starts going to school he wont realize that you are even gone that often.

depending on your career choice --

pick a college close to home that has transferable credits and do all of your minor courses there, then take some time depending on age of bro at end of minor courses, to decide what fancy college you want to do your major courses at.

i hope this helps, you already sound like you are the best bro in the world and you should let your parents see this question, just so they can see what a wonderful son and bro you are, to put him first before your own education.

someday you will be a true heartbreaker -- you sound very loyal and loving. good luck on your future decisions.

Well, a prestigious college definitely is better but again having a college that is near home is not bad either .... save time on traveling and yet can be near to the family. If the college near your home is not bad in standard, choose to be near to the home is better.

Go to school as far from home as possible, it will teach you to take care of yourself and the confidence that no mater what, you can take care of it.
It's nice that you want to be part of your brothers life, it will be hard no mater what, fifteen yrs is a big seperation, just let him know now and always that you love him. Remember, say the words, no one knows that they are loved if they do not hear the words. Hugs are great, I love you is better.

difficult question. it depends. try to do both. prestigious colleges are no more farther than x,y,z colleges--- with to-day's airlines, bus/train transport and other means...You have a nice feeling that is what counts and let your family count their blessing in having a wonderful sis...enjoy.

you answered your own question. you have waited a long time for a sibling. why jeopardize your potential closeness with him by moving far away.
