Hey kurrshing11,

First it would be helpful if we had your surname - then we could help research where it came from.

I have spen countless hours researching my surname, and others. You need to trace your genealogy in the surname branch, back as far as possible.

You can do this on the internet. The GENFORUM has email contacts, and postings with similar SURNAME. Those people have done the research you seek! So, I recommend you get back as far as you can until you connect with someone doing the same research. Then ask them - in fact, maybe it is posted already!

Go to this web site, plug in your surname. If that does not do it, then at YAHOO search, put in " FAMILY", and that should bring up a number of sites that are genealogy in nature, depending on how common the name is.

Another suggestion - post your surname in a comment above. Many of us check back for such comments.

Try your name with different spellings - sometimes names were changed when people immigrated to the states. Otherwise, ask your parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles if your surname is now a shortened version of a longer European name. If you are still unsuccessful, write your paper about the name changes that occured during immigration and how it makes it difficult to find the origin of your surname. Good luck.

Have you tried Ancestry.ca? Or the Archives of Names In Canada and U.S.A?
my last name in the U.S. it translates to
Fortune but in Britain it Translates to Thunder!
my name Hrominchuk which originate from
Horassdemuninchuk which was shortened to Hrominchuk ( some shortened it even further to
Romin.. i think that was going to far)

It would help if you put your surname on here. I can look it up in about three seconds. What is it? E-mail me, and I'll get it for you!
