The USA attitude to ALL drinking stems from very Religious roots in their culture, the ability to consume lunatic quantities of alcohol has no scocial value in the States, only in the UK.
The consequenses of the after-effects of booze, missed work time, health problems, crime, social stigma etc., are all severley dealt with in the States, not so in the UK, where our culture has come to accept this type of behaviour.
I drink Single Malt, Bacardi, Vodka & Wine (not at the same time nor in the same glass) ,so far, at the age of 60 yrs., I have learned to CONTROL my intake.

That's because the English man displays the maturity of a baby in a pram...
I'm the former wife of an alcoholic, who talked just like you and never remembered hitting me next day when he'd sobered up, and who choked on his own vomit, after causing serious brain damage to himself through too much alcohol across too many years, and developing epilepsy... the sort caused by drink that kills off brain cells, and who had a seizure, a heart attack, choked on vomit and died, all at the same time... aged 41, on a cold kitchen floor, all alone.
Can't say I'm yank friendly because of their attitude that they rule the world and are the best... and never wrong... but in this, they win hands down!
Boasting about drinking 20 pints a night, only shows what a prat you really are... so go ahead noggin, and drink yourself to death and when you do, don't expect your kids to love you... or anyone to mourn, because they'll likely be so damaged by you by then, they'll either do the same to try and follow you... and destroy their livers totally, like one of mine did...
Or do as our oldest son did, when he tried to jump into his dad's open grave with grief... and then destroyed himself with drink and drugs and be all alone and too dangerous to help, as he is today... or, they'll refuse to let their mum mention your name again, because they are ashamed... and then change their names and disown all memory of you inside their lives, as three of my daughters did to their late dad!
And someone else will walk them down the aisle and be called dad.
I was left picking up the pieces of their damages souls and while I could forgive what he did to me, I could cheerfully have 'swung' for what he did to them!
English mum, gran, and former wife of a very sad and foolish man, who lost out on seeing all his daughters married and any of his grandchildren born!

English people are given sips of wine and beer when they are young, sometimes glasses of cider and sometimes they help themselves to alcohol. In america parents are more strick with alcohol rules, so by the time an Englishman is 20 he has a much larger possible alcohol intake then an american of the same body mass, muscle and age and such

in my experience americans in bars like to have shots of tequila, whiskey or another high proof spirit when they go out to drink. plus 8 to 12 bottles of beer. I am more of a fan of ale and stout than lager beer. I know guys that have gone out and had 12 shots of 100 proof vodka or grain alcohol in about 2 hours and 6 beers or more to wash them down and they are still standing. I myself have drank an entire 1000 mL bottle of vodka in one night on an empty stomach. It really depends on the person.

I've out drank my share of English, German, Irish, etc. people that have this same mentality, but I do agree with you when talking about the average American vs. the average Englishman. And that's on real alcohol, not piss weak beer, but whiskey, vodka, rum, etc. True that American beer is weaker, but beer is weak no matter where you get it.

Its just all resistences and how long they've been drinking. Its also ingrained in their culture (thanks to a mini ice age that caused all the grapes to die from the cold. More beer was made to keep people happy.)
I'm beting that if your trained and tried really hard, you could pull off 20pints an night and still walk home.
