Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) led a band of guerilla forces against the British during the American Revolution. He fought mostly in the Carolinas, but may well have seen action in Florida as well. Disney did a TV series "Swamp Fox" on him in the 50's, and the Mel Gibson character in "The Patriot" is loosely based on him.

Francis Marion led Continental irregulars in the South Carolina campaigns. Mel Gibson's character in "The Patriot" was veeerrryyy loosely based on the exploits of Marion and his men.

Frances Marion fought in the swamps of South Carolina, he is buried just off route 45 just outside of Cross, South Carolina on an old plantation. Great place to visit. His burial site is maintained by the park services.
