I've always been good with small talk. Bringing up the weather works but it can be very lame. Nothing is more irritating than when someone says "Is it hot enough for you?" and they always ask that when the heat is at it's worst. All that does is make it feel hotter! What I find works is to compliment them on something like "Oh you smell so good. What is that?". If you end the compliment with a question it's like opening a flood gate. People love to talk about themselves, so it really get the ball rolling and if it starts with a compliment, they are instantly disarmed and won't mind the personal question. Try it and do it often and you'll never have to deal with feeling awkward again.

You can tell everyone that, it's said that every 7 minutes there is a lull in conversation, and if you keep track in a group of people we've found it to be true....that was a fun thing to talk about that then made everyone start laughing the next time the "silence" came around.....

If it's someone I first meet yes I do ask a lot of questions, especially if they seem shy. With a more outgoing person the conversation usually just flows naturally. If I get the sense that the person isn't interested in talking to me though, I'll remove myself from the conversation.

Always get a piece of the daily news that's interesting which you can bring up to discuss during the awkward silence.......like hey, what do you think about the Kampusch kidnapping case?

Go to the different news websites CNN, MSNBC even something international like BBQ news and find some interesting stories. Try and stay away from politics and religion. Look for stuff that's funny or strange.

awkward silences always suck. my suggestion is don't try too hard because people can see through that. if you click with this person you are talking to my guess is it shouldn't be too hard to find something to talk about, because almost any topic of conversation would be acceptable. my 50 cents

...You could start things off with a few suggestions:
"....so, I think Im pregnant."
"...So, I was talking with my friend the other day about awkward silences."
"...so, when it gets silent like this, whats a good way to start up the convo?"
"...Anybody down for AppleBees?"
"...Oh my Gawd! Do you smell that?"

It"s OK to be silent, if it bothers you, that could be because your not very comfortable with the person your with, when you can sit with someone you like alot and not say anything at all just being together is enough than you no that's the person for you.
