you are attempting to judge this event by applying present standards to those in a specific time and place in antiquity. frankly, little is known of the mores and standards of behavior of the denizens of ancient sodom. if lot's daughters grew up in a city known for its extreme moral "flexibility", they might not find the practice of getting knocked up by daddy as abhorrent as you do. this is a really weak argument on your part, based upon your prejudices in the absence of empirical data.

The reason Lot's daughters seduced him was because they thought they were the only ones left in the world (no CNN, FOX, Internet MSNBC news back then) and they wanted to be able to continue the human race. It had nothing to do with wonton drunkenness and debauchery.

Sometimes righteousness can be comparative. Compared to the people of Sodom, maybe Lot was a saint!

Of course, the scripture calling Lot a "righteous man" was only dealing with his moral condition while he was IN Sodom. It doesn't mention his moral state after he LEFT Sodom.

There is no reason to call the record into question, without evidence to the contrary. That is one of the rules of historical study: the benefit of the doubt is given to the record, and not to our own thoughts.

Nobody said that Lot's incest was good. It was just recorded.

The point of the story being in Genesis was to show the origin of Moab and Ammon. Since these people were of similar lineage, but enemies of the Israelites, it was a way to put them down. Same for Ishmael and Esau.

To "SeeTheLight": The Bible says that Lot was "just and "righteous" as well. (2PE 2:7) More proof that it is nothing but a hypocritical book of stories used by the church for manipulation. Maybe these contradictions will help some of you to wake up, but i dont think so.... *sigh* and its crap that his daughters seduced HIM, of course he started it.... ridiculous.

I believe it is possible to get someone so drunk that you are able to seduce them. Some people who get drunk don't remember the things they do or say.

BUT, it is hard to believe that he did not know a single thing. It is also his fault too. I would say the blame lays on all of them.

It's hard when you're a product of your environment; usually the odd's are against you.

Lot raised his family in Sodom and we know what the 'norm way of life' was in Sodom back then. And where is Sodom today? Exactly my point.

Have you considered that the very reason this is not 'mainstream practices' today IS because of God's message and intervention by wiping it out.

No..what ever happend was a sin. The Bible does not make a sin OK by reporting it. God loved Lot despite of his sins, not because of them.

the lived in SODOM for a while, where the city engaged in homosexual rape gangs that would shock (almost) anyone from San Fransico

his daughters were saved from Sodom's demise... but apparently their judgement was affected

I think you also have to allow that they were in trauma

yes I do believe it
