Generally, if you have dyed your hair a permanent color darker than the blonde you want to go, or your natural hair color is darker than blonde, you will have to bleach your hair. I recommend doing so professionally, but you can buy bleaching kits at hair supply stores and maybe at some drug stores.

Depends on what you're working with now.
If red, use an ash tone to bring it down a bit. Staying away from any words like "Golden or reddish." It will just turn red anyway.
Ashe is a color that counteracts red and would under any other circumstance turn it green (Ashe is a green tone) but just like you use those little green correction sticks to fix red blotches on your skin the same principal applies.
If you are in the dark brown to black tones... no red, blues or violets. You're okay (stay away from Ashe in this instance) Go with violet based tones. Hard to know though because they don't exactly come right out and tell you if it is violet or not. You have to guess by the dodgy stupid names they give you like "crystal" and "candlelight." (Feria)
My advice to you (depending upon which of these circumstances apply) Is to either go with an Ashe tone if you already have red tones, OR if it is dark, go to a salon because you will have to strip it first, start with a clean slate and then incorporate the color you want back into the hair.
OR you could always get a foil and highlight your way back into the blonds!
Remember... dark hair when colored with a high lift blond box type dye, will always turn gray! Think about it... what do you get when you mix white and black?
Whatever you do... don't use a home stripper! Trust me... The hair loss is frightening!

What I did (and I had dark brown hair) was use the Clariol highlighting bleach kit (like 2 if you have shoulder length hair) bleach it using the kits wash, dry then put whatever color you choose on your hair. I like the way mine turned out. Hope this helps.
