in the US Open, you handicap has to be about 2 (a hair less, I think) and you must play your way through the qualifiers to actually get a spot in THE tournament - it is always a great story to hear of some no body playing their way in

Which Open? The US open (excluding exemptions) requires a 1.8 handicap to enter the qualifying tournaments. Other opens have different requirements and some local open are just that "OPEN". It is entirely up to the organizer to set the qualifying level.

Opens are not handicapped. You play in a qualifier, and a certain number of golfers more on unless you have qualified by other means.

The US OPen you have to a professional or a 1,8 index. They will send you a letter telling you not to come back if you stink the place up
