There are many things that we can all do. In the renewable energy community there's a saying - it's "Much easier to conserve a KWH than make one.
Spending £5000 on some solar panels for your rooftop might halve your overall mains power use over a year. Spending £10 on some energy saving light bulbs will probably do about the same.
In the short term, rip out all your filament light bulbs and smash them. Never buy them again, they waste so much power as heat it's unreal. Put in compact fluorescent or "energy saving light bulbs" as they're known. They cost about £2 if you look in the right place and pay for themselves in months rather than years.
There are a great deal of things we can all do to save the environment. The most cost effective thing we can all do today is get rid of our wasteful filament lightbulbs.

There are many things you can do. You cannot cure all the world by yourself but you can make a difference. Start with recycling, doing away with things that you know are harmfull to the enviroment that you currently consume. Take action by supporting groups or volunterring with groups that deal with specific issues you feel are the most important. Write letters to legislators to tell them not to kill the whales, the newly re-located wolves in Oregon, the rain forests.. lobby for alternative fuels that are renewable, ride a bicycle to work/school, plant trees, protest the poisoning of bodies of water, don't buy things that you know have a negative impact on the environment...
For more specific causes/actions do some searches on the internet like save the whales, save the rain forest. Also educate yourself via the least biased news sources you can find. (I recommend the Guardian .. formerly the Manchester Guardian, the Christian Science Monitor and the Utne Reader.) There is also Mother Jones although they tend to lean to the left on most issues.

We already screwed up this world. There's nothing we can do, but we can reduce our big impact on the environment a little. We should stop pollution, save the rainforests, stop destroying them, and leave the environment alone. Global warming is already starting, and we are the ones to blame. There's nothing we can do about this.

We can´t. There is not enough wisdom in each of us to do the right thing. It´s a question of education mostly. No total control and enforcement are possible around the globe.
