Okay, I would like to go to either Yale (first choice) or Brown (I'm currently a high school junior). I know that it will be difficult to get in, but I'm also worried about finances. I know that both have need-blind admissions, but even if I were admitted, I doubt I could pay.
My family makes less than $20,000 a year (there are four of us). Many people have said that I could apply for financial aid, but I don't know if I would get it. I am searching for scholarships, and I am planning on getting a job about a month after I turn 16 (I am planning on getting my permit first). Is there anything else I can do? Do I have a shot at financial aid or any other type of assistance? If worst comes to worst, I am sure I can go to a community or state college, but I don't want to give up just yet.

Thanks so much!

I am almost positive you would qualify for finacial aid, if that information stay roughly the same when you apply. Also, start now. Getting good grades and participating in clubs/sports/volunteering could get you a full scholarship if you work hard enough. The other option would be taking out loans. You obviously have big plans for yourself in the future and you would be able to pay back all the money you borrowed towards school after you are out and have a decent job.

Don't give up. I did the same. But do realize that it will be hard, not impossible, and that you will not only have $$ trouble but be around students that have tons of $$ coming from mom and dad. First, go see your counselor at school for advice. Go to the fafsa.gov website for information on loans/financial aid. You should qualify for a lot. Also, if you have good grades/xtra-currics there are a lot of merit scholarships- browse google searches. Check with Brown/Yale for their available scholarships. You should do this all ASAP so you can have it all worked out before the summer when you will be doing lots of apps/essays/etc.
But also...local schools can be A LOT cheaper and just as good if you have the motivation to graduate at the top of your class. You can succeed, with or without money, but you will be in for a long and hard journey.

You could probably get some financial aid. You could also get a student loan. Unless you're really an amazing student, schools like Yale and Brown probably won't give you a scholarship. Public schools usually give out more scholarships than private schools, so maybe you can apply to a top public school.

If there is a will there is a way. Concentrate on your grades and extra curricular activities. Apply to several colleges. Speak to your HS adviser to see exactly what is required for the application packets. Private schools often have FANTASTIC financial aid for families such as yours. I was a single parent and there was no way for me to afford a college education for my son. Bennington College (a prestigious liberal arts school in Vermont) awarded him scholarships and grants. At the time, I did not even qualify for a loan for school. Since then, I too have attended and graduated from college(while working full time) because of a private school's assistance. Good Luck.

You are just the type a person people want to give money too...FASFA..(FAFSA) one of the two...Try to get a very high SAT score and GPA, join as many extracurriculm activities as you can...Also join FastWeb.com...It is a site were you can apply for scholarship and essay contests, based on your major. You can also find out scholarships the school you want to attend offers...If not you can start saving now and take out loans that you probably will be paying off the rest of your life.
