Here is an easy and delicious receipe you can start with. This is one of the simplest dal recipes, but it very good and tasty--I have made it several times.

Massor Dal

3/4 to 1 cup of Massor dal (orangish red lentils), washed
1 3/4 pints of water
Two 1/4 inch thick slices of fresh ginger
½ tsp. Turmeric
1 tsp. Salt or to taste
Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

Baghar:
3 tbl. Oil or butter
1 tsp. Whole cumin
1tsp. Ground coriander
¼ tsp. Cayenne pepper

1. To wash the dal, fill a bowl with water, and slosh the lentils around, picking out any suspicious objects. Pour off water and repeat about 3-4 times until water is relatively clear.
2. Add first four ingredients, bring to a boil, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, or until dal begins to disintegrate.
3. Add salt to taste. Remove ginger.
4. Make the baghar and add to the dal. To make the Baghar (sometimes called a tarka), heat the oil or butter in a small sauce pan over medium high heat. Add the spices and fry for about 1 minute, until you can smell their aroma. Pour over the dal.
5. Heat a few more minutes and serve with fresh cilantro on top.

Boka Dushi (Dutch West Indian Chicken Kebabs):

This is the Dutch West Indian version of the classic Indonesian saté. Boka means "mouth" and dushi means "sweet" in Papamiento, the musical dialect that blends Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, and West African languages. Kejap manis, the ancestor of modern ketchup, is a thick, sweet soy sauce; you can substitute equal parts soy sauce and molasses. Sambal ulek is a fiery paste made of red peppers. Look for both in Asian markets.

1/4 cup kejap manis or 2 tablespoons soy sauce plus 2 tablespoons molasses
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons grated peeled fresh ginger
1 teaspoon sambal ulek or Thai chile paste
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast, cut into 1/2-inch-wide strips, or 1 1/2 pounds chicken tenders
Cooking spray
Dutch West Indian Peanut Sauce

Combine first 7 ingredients in a large zip-top plastic bag; seal and marinate in refrigerator 30 minutes.

Prepare grill.

Remove chicken from bag, and discard marinade. Thread chicken strips onto 18 (8-inch) skewers.

Place kebabs on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 2 minutes on each side or until done. Serve with Dutch West Indian Peanut Sauce.

(Totals include Dutch West Indian Peanut Sauce)

Yield: 6 servings (serving size: 3 kebabs and 2 tablespoons dutch west indian peanut sauce)

Better go for some good books. which are available in the market plenty....a lot of people say Tarla dalal.... in South Meenakshi Ammal is very famous...(in olden days) now it is mallika badrinath... you will also find books for microwave cooking etc., Don't worry you can become an expert very soon. All it requires is interest....and nothing else. But remember you have to please your man with your cooking and don't make his life miserable by asking to bring take aways all the time.
