I know how to play a B flat clarinet a little bit. I know how to finger most of the notes but not all of them. I'm not very big at all. I was thinkinkig about switching to clarinet this year,(I'm in 6th grade) but I want to spend maybe one more year playing trumpet and hopefully learn more clarinet skills. What do you think?

The biggest differences will be in how you use your air and lips. The fingerings are the smallest part of playing an instrument with a good sound. Bass clarinet is a little different from soprano clarinet in that it will require more air.

I don't think it matters whether you keep playing trumpet or switch now, but either way, at least a couple of private lessons with a qualified clarinet teacher (not necessarily a band director) can help you troubleshoot the differences required.

p.s. Good luck with whichever you choose! :)

All three of those instruments read in B-flat treble clef, which makes it a bit easier. Fingerings of clarinet and bass clarinet are identical, except for the low E-flat key on most bass clarinets. The bass clarinet will also require a good bit of air to play with a full sound. That shouldn't be a problem since you've already played trumpet, but there will be a difference in the embouchure. I think that any serious musician should learn at least the basics of as many different instruments as possible, so given the opportunity to do so, I'd say go for it. It wouldn't hurt to consult with your music teacher about this. With any luck you might be able to try out an instrument before committing to it. Ultimately, the instrument that you play primarily might not be the first one that you learned.

(I'm in 6th grade 2)i would say switch!! last year i switched from violin to clarinet!! it was really great. anyway bflat & bass clarinet have the same fingerings. maybe get 2-3 private lessons or a friend to help u so ur caught up. i took 4 priv8 lessons(and didnt know anything at all) then practiced & learned alot on my own & i caught up w/ my friend whod been payin 4 a year. clarinets loads of fun 2!!! mayb it would be a little easier to switch 2 bflat because then u dont have to learn a new staff. then after a year or so switch 2 bass since u already know the fingerings and everything. good luck :)

I think i will be a little weird to change at first, but once you get used to it everything will be natural for you. I recommend the clarinet, it rules! (I play it.)
