shortwave is a good hobby and also talking to other radio operators all over the world. you may want to consider your ham radio purchase thru a reliable dealer or check out the various auction sites. most of the time you can get a better deal over the internet. if you can pass the exam and get your license-- then you can get up to 1000 watts to transmit (if i remember correctly) but dont quote me on this lol-- i had a 250 watt that could reach out 1200 miles or so-- sometimes furthur on special days. i dont think you need to pass the morse code test if you apply for a license but this was years ago and laws may have changed. several different bands are available 2 meter-10-- 20-- 40-- and so on.radio shack has a list of available channels for the above bands for amatuer radio. be sure to read those frequencies which are restricked and emergency use channels.you will find that ameture radio is a great hobby and its basically free.

do you mean a two way radio? usually, but you need to look up your local laws. in america, i believe its up to 7 miles without a license, but no one cares. in communist nations, you might get shot.
