I have 2 German Shepherds that due to the recent rains have the tops of their ears really "eaten up " by flies. Is there anything I can do to remedy this problem or prevent it once I get it cleared up?

You can get an ointment from your vet (and maybe the feed store, I'm not sure) called VIP ointment. It is a fly repellent. You cake it on the tops of the ears where the flies land and it keeps them away, but you have to keep it on there. Also, make sure you scoop your yard for poop and other organic wastes every single day, sometimes twice a day, because that's what attracts the flies. There are fly traps that you can hang around where the dogs stay. They don't repel the flies, but it might cut down on the fly population. They are basically bags of water specially made to trap the flies.

It's from flies. I've tried all sorts of stuff to keep flies off. There are over the counter ointments you can buy for this. The thing I found works the best is strong cologne (yeah I was trying anything I could think of that flies wouldn't like). And, it's perfectly fine for your dog to be outside. Lot's of cool stuff out there to watch, smell, chase, etc.

Bring them indoors. They are getting fly bites because there outside! If this is not an option, I've heard that olive oil works. Of course fly repelant will work just be careful and not spray if the wound is open,, that would burn like crazy!!!!!

First thing you need to take the dogs to the vet and make sure that larvae was not laid in the ears. There is some stuff that you can put on their ears to help stop this, your vet and tell you the best ones to get.

I have four dogs (two shepherds) I use fly wipe. It is made for horses but you can also put it on dogs. You can get it at your local farm store. It works extremly well.

The vets have a cream that you can rub in or get some feminine hygiene spray and spray that on but keep it of the eyes or nose
