We are in the same boat. My 13 year old daughter wants to do the Australian People to People.
We have figured out that to gather enough funds she will need to have sponsors in addition to fundraising.
He can approach businesses with a sort of business plan, prepared in writing. He can share with them what he can bring to the business (advertising, community good will) in return for their sponsorship. He can appear occasionally in the public with or for them as a spokesman, etc.
Raffles also bring a bit in, but you need to check laws. We do not just sell a 'chance' ticket, but actually give the ticket buyer something at the time of buying the raffle ticket, kind of like getting something whether your ticket is drawn or not.
There are also numerous websites for fundraising opportunities, some are listed here: http://www.cheerfactor.com/fundraising.html
