Is this true, and if so, what is this huge rush to find a cure for aids. Maybe we should focus on the cancer?

There's a simple "cure" for the most common kinds of cancer: DON'T SMOKE. Although there are often other factors that predispose a person to certain kinds of cancer (diet, genetics, age, etc.), smoking is the #1 preventable cause of cancer in the industrialized world. This includes cancers of the lung, bladder, mouth, esophagus, and several other organs I can't recall off the top of my head. Go to www.cancer.org for more information. Diet and lifestyle are important, of course, but not smoking will significantly decrease any risk of cancer.

Other diseases related to smoking are emphysema, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), heart disease, and peripheral vascular disease (problems with circulation to places like the extremities).

P.S.--AIDS will kill everyone who gets it until they come up with a cure...so research and funding should continue on BOTH fronts. Both problems are "lifestyle related", and all the medical research in the world won't help eradicate these diseases completely until humanity learns to control its hedonistic, pleasure-in-the-moment tendencies.

More people may die from cancer and diseases caused by cigarettes, but AIDS is always fatal. Much research is being done, and the process can often be slowed, and the symptoms can be treated to rreduce suffering, but as of yet there is no cure. That is why AIDS is so serious, and the sad part is many cases could have been prevented by not having unprotected sex and not using contaminated drug paraphenalia.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer. Look at it this way; let's say being hit by lightning will kill almost anyone, but it only happens to a few people. Car crashes happen a lot more often, but are not always fatal. Car crashes still kill more people than lightning, just because they happen so much more often.
Cigarette smoking contributes to cardiovascular disease, so I think that's why they mention it.
It is worthwhile to look for an AIDS cure because there is a chance of finding a pill that will cure it. Cardiovascular disease and cancer in general are much more complex, and less likely to be cured with one type of medicine.

The problem is that most cancers are treatable. AIDS has no cure, so anyone infected has been given a death sentence.

Despite the fact that AIDS incidence is down across the United States, the number of people living with HIV remains high and among certain population groups, HIV infections are rising steadily. Current estimates suggest that between 650,000 and 900,000 Americans are living with HIV with at least 40,000 people becoming newly infected each year.

AIDS is a virus. If they can find a cure for AIDS, scientist basically will find a cure for all viruses including cancer and even the common cold.

Secondly, not many people in the US die, but in Africa it is an epidimic. SO many people in Africa die of AIDS each year.

No AIDS does kill many people in the US. Millions of people die from AIDS every year. We should be concentrating our efforts on AIDS AND cancer, not just one or the other.

AIDS kills people, just like cancer kills people. In fact, AIDS is considered a form of CANCER! AIDS research has led us to an understanding of how to manipulate the HIV virus so that it can be used to treat skin cancer - the infection part of the virus is removed and is then used for gene therapy. I'll bet you didn't know that. So if we should focus on cancer, we have to focus on AIDS too, as it IS a form of cancer (leukemia).

what huge rush! we need cures for all of these things.

AIDS can be spread to kids and other people. The numbers are going up. More people spread to more people who spread to more people etc

Cigarettes are a choice to the people smoking them. What we should stop is people exposing others through theirsmoking.

Cancer there are thousands of kinds.

I believe cars kill more than AIDS. The big deal is, AIDS is spread sexually! We have to curb our appetite! Can't let that happen!

If you add all the numbers they say smoking kills, there wouldn't be ANY smokers left. Smoking is just the popular demon, soon to be replaced by fat people!
