Most clubs have a life of over 20 years after all they are metal. Look for abuse, bent shafts, or destroyed groves, damaged ding in the head itself. Technology is an important factor, so clubs more than 10 years old should be avoided you can always check the model on the Internet

The same things as new clubs:
length of shaft
stiffness of shaft (regular, stiff or firm)
clubhead (grooves, worn face)

You should change the grips anyways as they are only good for 2 seasons of golf on average.
Whatever looks good when you look down at the club and the length is comfortable for you.

you need to check the grooves on the face of the club as well as everything else. if the grooves are worn down or almost gone they are no good. the grooves are used to help the club grip the ball while hitting it.

go online to find the clubs you want first. then search on ebay for them. also try to test the clubs first before you buy, then go on ebay for the purchase.
