The vet can usually tell if a cat is pregnant just by feeling the belly but they may do an X-ray. They don't really need to do an ultrasound unless you really want to know how many babies there will be but they can tell that from the X-ray a lot of the time too.

Not to scare you, but I had this stray coming around my house. She was very thin and looking for something to eat. So, as nice as I am, I would throw out some left over chicken or whatever I had in the refrigerator for her. A week later, I was the proud parent of 4 baby kittens about 4 weeks old. She brought them to me as I was so kind. Call your local animal control officer. That's what I did and she is taking care of everything. Doctor visits and all. Good luck!

Take her to the vet. She needs prenatal care, because the kittens could be subject to all kinds of things (feline leukemia, distemper, etc.) and could receive good care even before being born.
if not, you could have kittens that would need to be euthanized due to their illness.
Vets are usually reasonable people...if you can't afford a lot, talk to them about a price reduction, or a "pay by the week" plan...just don't show up in a new car and claim poverty!
