If a dental infection has spread to other parts of face how would you go about finding the location ?

if a dental infection has spread across your facial tissue planes already, get to the dentist as soon as possible. a physician will take one look, prescribe some antibiotics, and tell you to go to the dentist. the dentist is going to be the one to open the infected tooth up to allow the infection to drain or pull the tooth and allow it to drain through the socket. a physician doesn't have any training in this, and as such will pass you off to the dentist. go now, before it spreads to your brain or to your neck, it happens fast (within 24-48 hours usually).

Ask your dentist first, then he/she can refer you if necessary. There are several types of x-rays that can be taken to help identify the culprit. If you were a bit more specific of the infection itself, I might have been able to help a bit more, but regardless, see the dentist ASAP. Swelling is never a good sign. Most people don't realize that dental infections are directly related to heart disease.

A friend had an absessed tooth and infection spread throughout his body and he nearly died. He showed me a scar that goes nearly completely around him from the operation. I think he lost a kidney.

Just because antibiotics clear infection, it does not solve problem. See a dentist they will take panoramic xray and can see all teeth and possible infections if they are dental related.

The infection will sometimes give off gases that smell horrible. That's a huge indicator. A real easy cure---antibiotics. Sometimes draining the area would be necessary.
