The orchestras of big metropolitan cities are usually of some quality, so your list is a pretty good collection. It's rather difficult to hear all of those orchestras in person regularly enough to make a decision based on live performances, so we are forced to rely more upon recordings and reputation. And for that matter, recordings often reflect the conductor more than the orchestra. The New York Philharmonic, currently under the direction on Lorin Maazel is my personal favorite, although I lean toward some older recordings, such as the Chicago Symphony with Sir Georg Solti, and the Philadelphia Symphony with Eugene Ormandy. Leonard Bernstein made his home with the NY Philharmonic but he was also one of the first to be traveling "guest conductor," which is now standard practice. Check out Gramophone magazine for many comprehensive reviews of concerts and recordings that you may find insightful.

Your first five are the "big five". In addition to the others you listed, St. Louis, Houston, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Seattle are contenders.
