If you don't want to INHERIT the bird, tell your mom to choose a person NOW, before getting the bird. Some birds don't live as long, like a parakeet. My macaw and grey will probably outlive me. Research which birds are less long lived, and dont guess that you know where you will be or what you will want in ten, twenty, thirty years. It's your moms life, don't tell her she 'cant' get a bird to keep her company. I wish you lived in VA, I am selling two green cheek conures..soooo sweet and playful. Oh, and look into lovebirds..but only get one.

Parrots and macaws have incredibly long life-spans and are very intelligent birds, and they'd make a very interesting pet for your mother. If you do not wish to care for the bird after your mother passes away, there are many other options - you can sell the bird yourself, sell the bird to a pet shop if you don't want to provide a temporary home, or find an animal rescue willing to place the bird.
Because these birds are so long-lived and many will outlive their owners if purchased young, these suggestions for what to do with the bird would also be useful for finding a bird later in life. The bonus to adopting one of these birds later in life is that many have been trained to talk already and they'll readily pick up on any of the words or phrases you'd like them to say. If your mother is concerned that they may have been trained already to say something nasty, you might spend a few weeks visiting with the bird in it's current home, whether it be a rescue or a pet shop. Many places will suggest this anyway as you learn how to care for one of these exotic birds and the bird becomes accustomed to you, as these birds do require more care.
I think this could be an excellent pet for your mother if some care is placed into purchasing it, and doesn't have to be an unnecessary burden for you.

When this bird is around long enough, then you will love it as part of the Family. And since you know that this means something to your Mother, then what the heck, let her buy a bird. My Mom has a bird and it hates me, bites me and everything. Mom is the only person that can get close to this crazy bird. But if she asked me to take it when she passed on. I think I would. I think I would do it for her because I love her so much. She deserves her bird and when she's gone I'll deal with the bird then. Make him learn to love me then. After all he's just a messy little bird. I think I can handle that for Mom when she's done so much for me in my life time. See it this way. Maybe. It will be ok. Birds are so neat, even Mom's bird is neat. This bird can talk and everything.

it depends how old your mother is but here are some good ideas for some medium aged parrots.
Rainbow Lorikeet - 15 years
Grey Cheeked Parrot - 15 years
Pionus Parrot - 15 years
Eclectus Parrot - 20 years
if you look at it in years like this it isnt too long..
even Budgerigar live for 18 years and a Canary can live for 20 years so some parrots would be a good idea where as others would not be, like,
Amazon Parrot - 80 years
Macaw - 50 years
Superb Parrot - 36 years
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo - 40 years
those are just parrots but if it is any kind of bird she wants love birds are beautifull and sing so sweet when there is a pair.
and their life span is 10 years.
then there is the other option of giving the bird up for adoption when the day comes to do so.
hope i helped.

Take your mom to a pet store. Have her check out the birds there...the longer-lived ones are frequently the crankiest! She may decide to get a cute budgie or parakeet or one of the love bird types instead.
If she insists that she wants a long-lived bird, do the math with her.
"Mom, you're 70 now. This type of bird lives for 35 years. Do you think you can give him a good and healthy home when you're 105? I know you're tired of having your heart broken by pets that die too soon, but maybe the answer isn't getting a bird. Why don't we think about this, and see if you can volunteer at the local Animal Shelter (like one that doesn't euthanise)."
Good luck! I'll bet she'd love to be able to cuddle the animals and you can't - easily! - with a bird.

Boy this is a tough question to answer!Your whole family is involved in this question. Some birds live 50 to 80 years. They go threw many family members.birds need a lot of love and care and being talk to. the large ones cages are allot of work to keep clean. True love for the bird is commit ten and not minding all the care.

What makes you think your mom wants you to inherit the bird? If she's looking for a long living pet, she'll have time to search around to find an appropriate home. But who knows, maybe in time you'll learn to love the bird and couldn't imagine parting with it. Since it's your moms pet, don't concern yourself.

I would get her a grey parrot, they live a long time. You never know you may decide to keep the parrot once your mum goes. If not then a local pet shop or the RSPCA would be willing to take the bird on

Having a parrot is a really big responsibility. They a lot of attention, they are messy, extremely noisy, and can be very destructive. I own to cockatoos and love them to death but they are a lot more work than I ever anticipated. They love being around humans, so if this doesnt sound good to you let her know your not willing to probise her anything about taking on the responsibility

Sell him once she dies, make sure he has a good home. If you ask money for him, most likely the people want him. Some birds can live up to 70 years like the cockatoo.
