I agree with Paula P. Who freed which slaves? Throughout history, many many slaves freed themselves. Here in the U.S., the movement to abolish slavery was almost as old as slavery itself. Benjamin Franklin was one among many who established Abolition organizations. And even though the Emancipation Proclamation was brought to congress by Lincoln and passed by congress, former slaves were still far from "free". African Americans labored for a hundred years after the civil war to free themselves from poverty and discrimination. Indeed, ultimately, any slave must free his or her self. If I have the power to free someone, I also have the power to enslave that person again.
