How does it work? And is it effective on all? Can we protect our minds from it?

It's spelled 'telekinesis'. It doesn't work. It isn't effective on anything. And we don't have to protect our minds from it because one, it deals with moving objects rather than transmitting thoughts (that's telepathy) and two, it doesn't exist.

Telekinesis (despite what others will say) definitely does exist, but nobody can use it on your mind really. There's no need to protect your mind from it.
If you want to practice telekinesis, a great exercise would be to take a flat piece of cardboard and stick a needle through it, and place the assembly in such a way where the needle sticks up straight through the cardboard. Then, out of lightweight paper, make a small pinwheel that can be balanced on the point of the pin. Finally, cover the pinwheel with a small, clear plastic dome. That way, you can visually observe the pinwheel, and concentrate on it using your mind, without falsely moving it with air (such as breathing on it). There's really no way to accurately "describe" how to perform telekinesis. Pretty much, you just have to concentrate on doing it. Something that might help you along the way would be practicing yoga, as well as plenty of meditation.

Uri Gellar has done some wonderful work in this area and is probably the best known for it .. although he is a little nutty now , he has worked with researchers into the paranormal for years and astounded them with the results

Protect our minds from... telekinetics? That's when you're able to move objects with your mind... why would you not want that? More importantly... no one can screw with your mind like that.
Maybe you're talking about telepathic?
And to the dude above me, bullshit; Telekinesis does exist. Telepathy is another story.
