Steak Sandwich

1 large strip, round, or shell sirloin steak, weighing between 12 ounces and 1 pound

1/2 t. coarsely ground black pepper

Salt to taste

2-3 T. oil

2 T. chopped onion

4 oz. crimini mushrooms, cleaned and chopped

1/2 t. thyme

1 loaf French or Italian bread, or 1 Vienna loaf

3-4 T. prepared mustard

Trim any excess fat from the steak. Sprinkle both sides with pepper and salt, then brush with a tablespoon of the oil. Heat a cast-iron or nonstick pan and sear the steak about 2 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan. Cook the onion for 2 minutes in the remaining oil, then add the chopped mushrooms, sprinkling them with the thyme and a little salt. Cook, stirring, until they have softened. If the mixture dries out, add a tablespoon or so of water.

Cut a large piece of bread about 1 inch longer than the steak. (If you're using a Vienna loaf, you may not need to cut it at all.) Slice it lengthwise through the middle, leaving an uncut edge as a hinge. Spread both cut sides of the bread liberally with mustard. Now place the steak on the bottom half and scatter the mushroom mixture on top. Fold the top half of the bread down. Wrap the sandwich in two layers of plastic wrap. Take a long piece of string and tie the sandwich up tightly as if it were a parcel, knotting the string in several places. Put the sandwich on a plate and place another plate on top of it. Now weight it down with either cans of food or a bowl filled with water. Leave it for 8 hours or overnight in the refrigerator or other cold place. When you rescue it from the weights, it will be firm and flat. For serving, unwrap it and slice it on the diagonal so you have several strips, each about 3/4 to 1 inch wide. Arrange these on a platter with a bowl of relish or chutney to accompany them.

I have one that everyone looks at me funny, when I do. However I have got my cousins and some friends doing it too because its so great.

You can use any meat and whatever you want on your sandwich, it works well with everything but here is my personal favorite.

Ham and cheese with miracle whip a slice of tomato and DORITOS. Its great! Many people do eat Doritos on the side with their sandwich but its much better if your Doritos are on the sandwich itself because it incorporates the flavor with the meat and gets the tomato and miracle whip all one in bite! Plus it leaves the side of your plate empty for something else like cottage cheese or pickles!

For an unusual sandwich try french bread roll or white bread with regular cream chesse, and seasoned grilled chicken. Add thin slices of tomatos if you want.
I know this was not a part of your question, but an interesting food you can make is: flour tortilla, regular cream cheese and thin slices of smoked slamon with raw onions. YUMMY!!

Cream cheese and banana - this is obviously sweet and rather rich because of the cheese. Naturally I mean real cream cheese rather than good old Dairylea!

I also love sliced cucumber with salad cream - very tasty and refreshing in hot water, and I had a friend who liked tomato sandwiches.

Cheddar cheese and sliced banana. Or tuna, mayo, finely chopped onion and cucumber all mixed together and spread on bread. It's yummy in a Jacket Spud too.

Addictive Sweet Potato Burritos
Submitted by: Karena

Photo by: Allrecipes "Once you've had one - you'll want another. The recipe is a little different from most burrito recipes, but I've had many, many requests for it. Serve these with sour cream, chopped green onions and salsa. For vegan burritos, omit the cheese and sour cream. These may be made ahead of time, individually frozen, then heated. For an interesting variation, try deep frying these tasty burritos."
Original recipe yield: 12 burritos.

My mom used to make us cheese and jelly sandwiches when we were little. Can't say that they were my favorite though. We thought she made them for us because we didn't have much money, but when we asked her about it recently, she said they were good and she thought we liked them! She also made braunschauger sandwiches too, those were a bit better. It's in a plastic tube by balogna in a grocery store.
