Commercial aircraft are all much of a muchness really as far as beauty in design goes, with the dazzling exception of Concorde.

Military aircraft, well for my money you can't get better than the Spitfire. But I'm a 30 something Brit brought up on tales of derring-do by heroic fighter pilots over the East coast of England during the second world war.

I haven't looked at any of the aeroplanes except the one you might have not looked at ever: the [brand] new Boeing 797. It seats 900-1000 people. I'm just telling you, go to Yahoo! Search and click on the second result.

I would have to say the B-29 Superfortress. It's outer fuselage is just so smooth, aerodynamic, and it has a nice shape alltogether. The windscreen at the front is just perfect too. It looks beutiful from the inside- http://www.aeroknow.com/images/b29-2w.jpg The engines make a nice sound too, when all that air rushes into the the round metal around the engine, it sounds kind of echo-ish and mystical almost. If you look at it from the front to the side, it looks like the front part is standing up high and proud, kind of like a dog when he's sitting- http://www.alaska.faa.gov/fai/images/Aircraft/B29-a.jpg

For sheer crowd stopping potential it has to be the concorde, for sheer sharp intakes of breath spectacle, it has to be the Avro Vulcan. Looks like a bomber, manouvres like a fighter and that noise kicks the air out of your lungs. Same engines as the concorde, yet without the Concorde mods.

In fact there are three aircraft that have really caught my attention:

1. Concorde without a doubt ! ( lucky you colin, I missed my chance to fly concorde)
2. Diamond-D Jet
3. Adamjet A700 -what a beauty!

consider the last two a joint contenders!

Spitfire for sure, (but not the later marks with clipped wings and bubble canopy).

The Canadair CF-86 Mark 6 Sabre is a really close second.

Concord! But then I'm biased, I once took a flight in it. A british holiday company chartered it for pleasure flights lasting 1hr 40mins, it flew at 60,000 and reached Mach 2. It was still expensive for a short flight but it was well worth it. I'm sad it's gone after just one major accident, but that's the way of the world.
