Yes.
Anything is possible. With the current splits in the world based on religion and politics I think we are close but not too close. Maybe in another 5-20 years it will happen.

Why would you think that we are not in a world war at the present time?
The western and eastern philosophies of extreme conservative Christianity and extreme conservative Islam have been at odds for over a 1,000 years. The intensity has waxed and waned through those years. Currently it is at high intensity and with the type of weapons available to both sides it is very dangerous.
What is making this almost unsolvable is that both of these extremes include significant elements that believe that this is the “end times.” That is, from their religious perspectives there will soon be an apocalyptic war that will destroy everything and it is their “religious” responsibility to make sure the war occurs and that Israel is destroyed.
With such individuals totally committed to the death of others, and willing to die to see these others dead, finding a solution through negotiation is near impossible. At the same time these extremists attacking the west cannot be tolerated. If this means expanding the current conflict into acts none of us want to think about, then that will happen.

Iran has oil wealth. They are the worlds second biggest producer of oil. If someone gave them a reason to buy a nuke they could buy one from Russia. They may have already, we would not be told. Russia has 22,000 nukes and Bush has refused to ask V.Putin to put the nukes under his control for security. Bush and Putin are not talking since Putin would not support the invasion of Iraq the second time after Iraq surrendered in Desert Storm.

yes, it is quite possible
With so many countries taking sides and most middle eastern countries prepared to either support or participate in pushing the Jews out of Israel. Most countries are angry with the U.S. over the War on Terror and the leaders of the countries that are with us are under immense pressure to to oppose the United States. These are exactly the kind of tensions that cause world wars.
