No one really believes at a subconscious level that god exists. Humans would have died out long ago were they to have actually believed in a god and an afterlife for the believers. Mass suicides would have taken place in order to more quickly get to the afterlife, and because early religion often didn't prohibit suicide, the test of ones faith should have been the choice of suicide or life.

Today, suicide is a sin in many major religions because it prevents people from actually killing themselves to get to heaven. Really, there is no explanation for this other than a lack of subconscious faith in a god and afterlife. If anyone would care to email me to explain where I am wrong, I would appreciate it.

No human can be absolutely certain about an after life -- they're deluding themselves if they think they are. The only way to be absolutely certain about anything is to have first-hand knowledge of it...and that's impossible with an after life. So...even those who claim to be certain have fears and doubts about the existence of an after life (and rightly so, since there's no proof there is any such thing), leading to behavior that would seem to contradict their professions of certainty.

Because reproduction is fun! And even if you don't produce offspring, it's fun to try.
