As with any other trip, one needs to be prepared. The best advice is to get a sleeper, although they are very expensive, at least according to my pocket book. So if ya can, upgrade. I am not familiar with Amtrak's eastern operations, but, if ridership is light on the day you travel you may the luxury of two seats in the coach. which makes for better sleep.

I would also advise bringing your favorite diversion along with you, such as reading material, games, music, etc. A good supply of your favorite snacks and beverages will help you along the miles as well, and your pillow should make the trip with you.

Good luck and have a safe trip...............

I just rode amtrak for 18 hrs The seats are comfortable. The bathrooms are clean. It was a very nice way to travel. I would recomend it. Plus they have a snack car with drinks and food. They play movies in the observation car.

I've taken Amtrak numerous times. It is comfortable and the food is good for "fast food." Some of the routes also have wireless internet on board.

It was comfortable if you're able to sleep sitting in a chair. I went to New Mexico from Chicago and slept horrible. Mostly though, because there were other stops in the middle of the night and it was cold out. So I'd just be getting warm and a blast of cold air would come back as passengers joined in.
