a frequent piece of rhetoric is how 'hard working' mexicans are supposed to be. Yet, somehow, despite this golden work ethic, their country is in poverty. What's REALLY going on, here?

know statistics can be misleading, but the gap in production in Mexico and the United States is so wide that it only can tell us that you are falling further and further behind the people of the United States, with no end in sight. At an exchange rate of 10 pesos per dollar, the per capita GDP of Mexico is not much more than $1500 -- while it is almost $30,000 in the United States. In other words, Americans in total produce 20 times more per person than in Mexico.

A major part of the problem has been Mexico's long term economic instability. The North American Free Trade Aggreement has helped with this some but the volitile political atmosphere is still keeping Mexico from moving foreward to it's real potential. If they can some how work together toward this, helped or not by other countries, then the poorer people will not have to go elsewhere to find jobs.

Because Mexico is a Kleptocracy, and combined with NAFTA and outsourcing this leaves the Mexican economy in a perpetual state of near-collapse. Mexico needs out-migration to keep its economy from failing. The money immigrants to the US send back to their families ranks second or third on Mexico’s revenue list, so the government and economy benefit twice.

The immigrants coming to America are incredibly hard working. Think about how difficult it is to go to a country with no money, you don’t speak the language, you have no documentation, and you need to get a job so you (and the family you left behind) can survive. Think about how bad things would have to be in your own country for you to choose this alternative. And, on top of that, you have to cross a desert that has claimed the lives of thousands of your fellow countrymen who also tried to find a better life

Mexicans do work really hard they ust get paid **** in their country for doing the same job. The lazy people are most of the lower class american's cause they know they can get welfare so they choose to do that instead of clean hotel rooms or clear tables at a restaurant. American's are to proud to do most of the jobs Mexicans will do with a thought.

Airlines Supervisor
Mexico = $3.75 an hour USD
US = $13.50

Housekeeper
Mexico = $.75 an hour
US = $8.25 an hour

Construction worker
Mexico = $5.00 an hour no machines just their hands
US = $22.00+ an hour and we have machines to help

Mexican's work really hard in Mexico too. The problem is not with work ethics, but with a corrupt government that is not business friendly.

Government issues and peoples work ethic at two different things. If the Mexican gov. or companies from all over the world including American that are there would pay them better, then they obviously would stay there.

Immigrants come from all countries to this nation for a better life. They do need to do it the right way, I agree.

Now, if China is all that, then why are their immigrants here also dying to come here? The only difference here is that Mexico is just next door.

Perry, they do have a minimum wage. Where are YOU from?

Mexico has no minimum wage and the labor unions were neutered in the 1960's.

My dad had a factory and he hired primarily Mexicans because they would work for minimum wage, showed up everyday, didn't have drug problems and generally had a very good/happy attitude. I learned spanish working there in the summer and gained plenty of respect for my Mexican co-workers...plus they always brought really good leftovers to work. The white people he hired never worked out, they were flaky and usually came with a drug problem.

Cuz they come here and work for lower wages if not for them you would be paying $5.00 for one tomatoe and $20.00 per pound for onions and other produce. On Avondale Colorado they are paid 32 cents a bucket for picking tomatoes in the feild while the farmers spray harmful insecticides over them causing blisters on them. would you work for those wages and under those condition. I am a united states citizen I worked with these people you call mexican workers they are kind, decent, people for the most part. There is good and bad in every culture.

Oooooohhhh my God!!! Do you think a country's wealth depends on how hard people work????
I advise you to read international news every once in a while.
Just for you to have a clue, Cuba is one of the countries with highest medical education in the world. Do you know how much is the average montlhy salary of a Doctor in Cuba? $30.00.
Does this give you any idea on how politics, international agreements, oil, access to primary raw materials, education and war affects a country's economy???

Because Mexico has been constanly bullied and opressed by other countries (and selfish Mexican capitalist pigs), who benefit from the extreme exploitation of the mexican working class.
Don't be fooled by misconceived stereotypes spread by stupid movies, comedians or cartoons.
